#28.Creating an AI Tutor: 3 Key Items

AI has revolutionised the way we can learn generally but also specifically, such as when we prepare for any given exam. The concept of the AI 'tutor' is now familiar to many educators, but how do you quickly make a good AI tutor which can produce relevant and useful practice exam resources for your students? In this blog post we look at answering that question with a focus on how to make an AI tutor as efficient and as easy to use as possible for the users, whether that is the teachers or the students.

Firstly, if you watch the short video here you can see 5 simple steps for how to actually make a GPT in OpenAI.

Now we have seen how to make a GPT, we need to further consider the 3 key items that go into creating a very useful and efficient AI tutor. These are:

1. Define the Configuration Prompt: A well-structured configuration prompt is crucial. It ensures that the AI understands the scope and requirements of its tutoring capabilities. By specifying the types of questions and subjects it should cover, the AI can provide targeted help.

2. Incorporate Diverse Material: Whatever the specific purpose of the AI tutor you are creating, equip it with a wide range of materials. Upload sample exam questions as screenshots and also PDFs or links to useful websites which the GPT can access in order to train itself on the level of the exam content and also the exam format.

3. Implement a Typing Instruction System: Simplifying the interaction process, a typing instruction system lets users input a specific number corresponding to the kind of assistance they need, such as '1' for a reading passage or '5' for a vocabulary list, as seen in the example video. Using a 'typing' instruction model, users can interact with the AI seamlessly. It's like speed-dialling on steroids! Just type in a number and the teacher or student gets exactly the practice question(s) they desire. This is the hallmark of a successful AI 'tutor'—offering a shortcut to access practice questions and activities tailored to specific exams or topics, making study sessions productive and time-efficient. Just make sure that you have the list of numbers and their corresponding activities handy, just in case you forget.
